On the run after jumping parole in 2018, three brothers accused in rape and murder cases nabbed in Gujarat
Between 2010 and 2012, Vedva gang, allegedly involved in various cases of loot, dacoity, rape and murder in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, had kept Gujarat Police on its toes. Its primary targets were individuals living in isolation — typically farmers, labourers, and residents of farmhouses or agricultural fields. Following their arrest, the gang members, all part of the same family, were sent to Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad when, in 2018, 10 of them were released on parole. None of them reported back to the jail. After a search that lasted over seven years, three members of the gang, all brothers, were recently arrested by the Ahmedabad Rural Police in Morbi. Mahesh alias Tendu Keshubhai Vaghri, Shanko alias Devraj Keshubhai Chunara, and Rajesh alias Kalu Keshubhai Chunara had been living in Morbi under false identities after spending several years in Rajasthan, police said. During the arrest, the family members of the accused also tried to attack the personnel, police added. Police said the accused were involved in a total of 10 serious criminal cases registered at various police stations including Viramgam, Sanand, Bopal and Bagodara in Ahmedabad Rural; Sarkhej and Odhav in Ahmedabad City; and Vadodara City. Police said the arrested trio was convicted of several counts of loot, dacoity, rape and murder. They remained absconding for a prolonged period of over seven years, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Om Prakash Jat. Their criminal history included three cases involving loot with murder, two cases involving dacoity with rape, and five cases of armed robbery and violent assaults. In two of these cases, the accused were sentenced to life imprisonment, said Ahmedabad Rural Police, which intensified the effort to apprehend the gang members around a year ago. The gang's primary targets were individuals living in isolation, said SP Jat, adding, 'In many cases, if the victims resisted, the gang inflicted serious injuries, often resulting in death.' Upon receiving intelligence that some of the absconding convicts were residing in Morbi city under false identities, a police team was formed comprising Police Sub-Inspector R B Rathod and five constables. The team proceeded to Morbi for surveillance and further investigation. During the operation, it was discovered that the accused were living in residential units within a complex near the Mahendranagar water tank in Morbi, said police. Approximately 20 such shop-like structures were being used as makeshift residences, with open surroundings that could facilitate escape, they added. 'The area was tactically cordoned off, and while the police were checking the premises, the convicts attempted to flee upon sighting the personnel,' said police. SI Rathod said, 'Two people ran from the premises and were identified and placed under arrest. The third was caught shortly after.' During this operation, the family members of the convicts attacked the police in a bid to help the convicts escape, officers said. SP Jat said the police team used appropriate force to control the situation, disperse the crowd, and ensure the safe custody of the arrested individuals. A statement from the Ahmedabad Rural Police said that during interrogation, it was revealed that three other absconding co-accused— namely Keshu Hemabhai Chunara and Bhura Keshubhai Chunara (residents of Saida), and Raju Luvji Jiliya (resident of Nadiyana, Viramgam) — had died while on the run. Legal steps have been initiated to remove their names from official jail records. Further investigation to arrest the other convicts is underway.

India on top despite Smith and Brook's hundred heroics in 2nd Test
England were in dire straits at 84-5, more than 500 runs behind, when Smith joined forces with Brook in just the second over of the day's play. They came together after Mohammed Siraj had taken two wickets in two balls, including removing Ben Stokes for the first golden duck of the England captain's Test career. But England's sixth-wicket duo went on to add 303 runs before Brook fell for 158. And by the time England were dismissed for 407, Smith had surpassed Surrey mentor Alec Stewart's previous highest Test score by an England wicketkeeper of 173 against New Zealand at Auckland in 1997. But the new ball proved England's undoing for the second time in the match as they lost their last five wickets for 20 runs. Siraj (6-70) and fellow paceman Akash Deep (4-88), in for the rested Jasprit Bumrah, did the damage between them in an England innings featuring six ducks. India, looking to level the series after last week's five-wicket loss in the first Test at Headingley, led by 180 runs on first innings, with captain Shubman Gill's superb 269 the cornerstone of their 587 all out. And they had extended that advantage to 244 runs at the close, with India 64-1 in their second innings after gifted left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose 28 featured six fours, was lbw to fast bowler Josh Tongue. A rueful Brook told Sky Sports: "Up until I got out I felt like we were almost clawing it back, but our tail had a collapse, as we saw with them (India)." Smith's hundred was just the second of his 12-Test career following the 24-year-old's 111 against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford last year and Brook forecast a glittering future for his team-mate. 'Phenomenal' "It was good to spend some time out there with Smudge (Smith), he's got a long career ahead with England and he's a phenomenal player," said Brook. England resumed on 77-3, with Joe Root and Brook -- the world's two top-ranked Test batsmen -- 18 not out and 30 not out. But Root soon glanced fast bowler Siraj to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Next ball, Stokes was undone by a superb rising delivery from Siraj that he edged behind, reducing England to 84-5. Smith, however, survived the hat-trick by straight-driving Siraj for four. It was the start of a blistering 80-ball hundred that included 14 fours and three sixes as Smith joined a select group of batsmen to have made 100 runs before lunch in a session of Test cricket. India had rested Bumrah, the world's number one ranked Test bowler, in order to protect the fast bowler's fitness in a series where he is expected to feature in just three out of five matches. But in his absence, Smith smashed 22 runs in a single over from paceman Prasidh Krishna, including a six and four fours. Smith, showing no obvious ill effects from the strain of keeping wicket for 151 overs struck consecutive fours off experienced left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the last over before lunch to complete an astounding century. Brook, 91 not out at the interval went to a hundred after giving his wicket away on 99 in the first Test and went on to exceed 150 for the fifth time in his nine hundreds at this level. But Deep eventually broke through with the new ball by bowling Brook with a fine delivery that darted back off the seam. Deep also removed Chris Woakes for five on the Warwickshire all-rounder's home ground. He had previously reduced England to 13-2 by dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks. Smith smashed Deep for six over long-on to raise England's 400 but Siraj cleaned up the tail as Brydon Carse, Tongue and Shoaib Bashir failed to manage a run between them. © 2025 AFP

Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry breakup: Couple to focus on co-parenting daughter Daisy
Hollywood power couple Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, who'd been sparking speculation about their yearslong romance in recent weeks, has broken up. Representatives for Perry and Bloom, who have been engaged for six years, confirmed their separation in a statement to USA TODAY on July 3. "Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry's relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting," the statement read. "They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect," the statement from their representatives continued. Us Weekly was first to report. The announcement comes after previous reports and media speculation that Perry, 40, and Bloom, 48, who share 4-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, had ended their nine-year relationship. People and Us Weekly reported in June that the couple had allegedly ended their engagement. Perry and Bloom began dating in 2016, briefly split in 2017 and got engaged in February 2019. They welcomed daughter Daisy in 2020. Bloom raised eyebrows in late June when he attended Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Italy alone. The "Lord of the Rings" alum, donning a crisp white button-down and khaki slacks, flashed a peace sign to onlookers as he left the Gritti Palace Hotel in Venice via boat. Perry had a slate of four Lifetimes Tour concerts in Adelaide, Australia, during Bezos and Sánchez's wedding weekend. After the celebrity nuptials wrapped, Bloom posted some inspirational quotes on his Instagram Story on June 30. In the first slide, Bloom re-posted a translated quote from the Buddha that read, "Each day is a new beginning. What we do today is what matters most." In a follow-up post, Bloom typed up a "daily encouragement by Daisaku Ikeda," a prominent Japanese religious figure and Buddhist: "The important thing is to take that first step. Bravely overcoming one small fear gives you the courage to take on the next." Contributing: KiMi Robinson, USA TODAY

Erratic Alcaraz battles into Wimbledon fourth round
Alcaraz made 28 unforced errors in an inconsistent display on Centre Court but conjured enough moments of magic to eventually subdue the world number 125 and book his place in the last 16. The world number two had been pushed to the brink in a five-set win over 38-year-old Italian Fabio Fognini in the first round and looked below his best again in a second-round victory over British amateur Oliver Tarvet. After grinding out his latest underwhelming win, the Spaniard has plenty of room for improvement. "I knew it was going to be really difficult. I had to be really focused. His game suits the grass with the big serves," Alcaraz said. "It's stressful. To be honest, I was suffering in every service game today, 0-30, break points down. "I'm really pleased that I was fighting, running for every ball and making great shots." In contrast to Alcaraz's laboured efforts, world number one Jannik Sinner -- his main rival at the All England Club -- has dropped just 12 games in his first two matches. It is hardly time for Alcaraz to panic, however. He has won his past 21 matches since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April, a streak that has brought him titles at the Rome Masters, the French Open and Queen's Club. The 22-year-old, who fought back from two sets down to beat Sinner on clay in an epic final at Roland Garros last month, has won 32 of his 35 Tour-level matches on grass. The five-time Grand Slam winner's last defeat at Wimbledon came against Sinner in the fourth round in 2022. "He pushed me and it was just about surviving. I'm surprising I'm standing here after four sets," Alcaraz said of the hard-hitting Struff. Having vanquished Novak Djokovic in the past two Wimbledon finals, Alcaraz is looking to join an elite group of Wimbledon icons. He hopes to become the fifth man in the Open Era to win at least three consecutive Wimbledon titles after Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and seven-time champion Djokovic. Having fretted about his misfiring serve in the first two matches of his title defence, it was a worrying moment for Alcaraz when he started the match with a double-fault. The Spaniard managed to win that game and quickly broke Struff's serve twice to wrap up the opening set in just 27 minutes. Alcaraz looked in complete control when he broke again early in the second set. Yet his serve woes suddenly returned as he was broken in the next game and again in the eighth, allowing the 35-year-old to level the match. Alcaraz, then still a precocious teenager, had to come from two sets to one down to beat Struff in the Wimbledon first round in 2022. He was not in quite such a perilous position this time, but the Spaniard was still relieved to take the third set after landing the crucial break in the second game. Alcaraz was pushed hard in the fourth set before at last delivering the knockout blow.
